Born and raised a Saskatchewan farm girl, Cynthia found herself like most Saskatchewanians moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1992. Her life in Calgary is focused on her husband Douglas, their two dogs Finn and Clyde and her art. Cynthia has worked as a certified dental assistant in Saskatchewan and Alberta for the past thirty-eight years. With her job being very systematic and structured, she decided to broaden her artistic side. In 2010 she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with distinction from the Alberta University of the Arts.
In 2017 she became a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and volunteered as their Secretary for the Calgary Chapter. She enjoyed volunteering and learning from fellow artists and has become a member of Calgary’s well established art societies as Calgary Sketch Club, established 1909 (Juried Membership) and Leighton Art Centre (established in 1974 by Barbara Leighton).
Cynthia’s work is in private collections across Canada and the United States.

“Cynthia’s painting practice focuses on working in a series, this allows her to experiment and create unified and relatable bodies of work. Each piece in the series creates a language that is a direct response to her investigations. Her process is about being able to explore and investigate a particular idea, allowing her to delve deeper in a more meaningful way from a greater variety of perspectives. Working in a series, in a way, is like writing a novel. Very few ideas can adequately be expressed in a single chapter as compared to how thoroughly they can be treated in an entire novel. Cynthia wants the viewer to experience not a moment or an instance but take themselves on a visual journey with each series. Even though each series has a different theme, the common thread that binds them together are her use of radiant and vibrant colours and her expressive and bold brushstrokes. Her intuitive approach to painting produces an atmosphere on the canvas that is not passive, instead the work causes the room to be electrified with colour, movement and texture.
Cynthia’s pieces are personal and her playful approach to painting is a way to turn off her rational thinking, a place to study experiences and create something that pleases her senses. She takes sentiments of the outside world and combines them with the thoughts in her head, to create playful, colourful and lively pieces. When she paints, all her attention goes into capturing a moment of a memory or a hint of sunlight hitting a flower that make each piece meaningful to her.
Through her choice of colours, textures and supports, Cynthia’s pieces exert exhilaration, excitement and an inescapable charge on the space it occupies and also the viewer who engages with it. The dynamic colours on the canvas have a way of illuminating the room, producing a physical activity where each piece exists in a distinct place and time, responding to the pull of light, gravity and water. The vibrant colours saturate the surface from edge to edge, asserting a presence that the viewer will find too alluring to ignore.
